My daughter just called me from Pennsylvania and a bus full of
New York volunteers returning from Ohio where they had helped the
Kerry campaign for the last five days. Yesterday she still canvassed
for six hours in driving rains. These young people worked very hard,
and it was all in vain. The country goes to the bible thumpers and
the war-is-the health-of-the-state crowd. I have seen a number of
bumper stickers: "Four more wars". It must be something systemic.
Remember Mark Twain's War Poem? He put his finger right on it, and
nothing has changed.
