Right. Eva-01 had previously been effectively an extension of Shinji
himself - IIRC, by this stage he's achieving record-breaking sync
ratios. Then suddenly control is ripped from him and 01 begins its
gruesome dismemberment of 03. How would you feel if your body suddenly
started acting on its own and hacked someone to pieces? Sure, it
wasn't _you_ doing it, but still...
