Aw, you got there first. The destruction of Eva 03 was definitely the
high point of the series; sure, it was brutal and nasty of Gendo to do
something like that, but since the alternative was letting Eva 01 get
destroyed and risk everything, it was an unfortunate necessity. The
thing that made it almost unbearable was that it wasn't just an
unmanned Eva on autopilot tearing 03 apart - it was, in effect, Shinji
doing it. A traumatic experience for such a sensitive person...

Finding out the pilot was still alive was a bit of a let-down, IMO. I
couldn't help but get the feeling that it had been written in because
someone thought things were getting a little _too_ nasty. Toji should
have been found dead in the ruined plug - I can't seriously believe
he'd survive.
