It didn't appear rude to me (if you were worried). I just haven't time
to read the NG for the past few days. Been too busy to even pick my nose.

Thats basically 2 questions. Why work hard? and (why) for no salary?

There are salaries, I just don't receive them. We pay the taxes, then
leave the funds in the accounts for cash balance purposes. If and when
the situation improves I then have the option of receiving the money. On
the plus side, it means that my savings rate is ridiculously high, and
the payoff would be much greater than any interest a bank could offer,
or the likely return from the average stock portfolio. On the downside,
if/when an entity was shut down, I'd lose all of those deferred
payments. I might end up being able to put down a 50% deposit on a nice
house, I might end up basically in the same situation I was in say, 10
years ago.

Why work my arse off? Partly because I can. There are no dependants to
support, not even a goldfish, so I can afford to take a few risks. I
expect I'll be more risk averse in the future, especially if I have any
sprogs, but for now if a business goes under, it is just a matter of
some days you eat the bear and some days the bear eats you. And partly
because I want to. I've been a corporate drone in the past and didn't
like it. I like what I do now. Its more fulfilling than trying to work
out if a particular widget can be made in 52 minutes 16 seconds instead
of 52 minutes 37 seconds (which is what 8 months of my tragically wasted
life was once spent on). I don't enjoy the lifestyle that goes with it,
but put up with it because I hope/think it will only be for a few years.
