A bit of the first two with the notion that a bit of the third might be
good for my health. ;-)

But since the essentials, like sun tan lotion or beer, cost more money
than philosophizing brings in, i do all sorts of other odd stuff related
to languages and international relations, like helping people with
communication and paperwork related to studying abroad (i.e., everything
from initial inquiries to foreign universities to getting the successful
applicants their visas), doing translations and event planning,
imparting some survival skills in German on music students planning to
go to where the Mozarts and Beethovens roam, and teaching "English
plus", like theater and English pop songs, to students at the Okinawa
Language Center, or travel related communication and survival skills to
young civil servants working at the Okinawa General Bureau (most of
those young people have never been off the island, except maybe for a
school trip to Japan).

That's the idea. I tend to remember those who've helped me (advice is a
kind of help in my books) and figure there is satisfaction from knowing
when your advice has been put to good use. And then there's also
possibly a tradition to uphold: it was from this newsgroup that I got my
first real-life advice about Japan some years ago.
