I just tried setting up an account for the News.Individual.NET server
and everything went OK up to the getting messages step. At that point it
asked me for my username and I canceled because I don't have a username.

The steps I followed were these:

1. Tools > Account Settings.

2. In the Account Settings window, press the Add New Account... button.

3. Fill in the information requested by the wizard.

(I suspect you have already finished these steps and have an account set
up for News.Individual.NET.)

Looking at the account I set up for News.Individual.NET, which seems to
connect correctly, I see the following settings:

Server Type: News Server (NNTP)

Server Name: News.Individual.NET

Port: 119

Security Settings, Use Secure Connection (SSL): Unchecked

Server Settings: The first two checkboxes don't matter. Select your own
preference.

Always request authentication when connecting to this server newsrc
file: Unchecked

That should do it. If you get "Please wait" for a long time and nothing
happens when updating the newsgroup list, the most likely culprit is the
Use Secure Connection (SSL) setting. This should not be checked, it
would appear.

It is also sometimes a good idea to exit Thunderbird and then restart it
after changing these kinds of settings.

Good luck!
