I used something called DiskCommander in a similar situation a few years ago
http://www.pillar-solutions.com/p_disk_commander/ it worked - that's all I 
can remember about it.

Sadly, the 50Gb of music files that it recovered - three years of careful 
collecting, were lost, together with a further 100Gb of files,  when a 
seperate hard disk crashed, and no matter what I tried I couldn't rescue 
jack shit a second time.  I need one of those hard disk platter scanners 
like they used in CSI once - and the 50,000 dollars they probably cost.
