Re: Career in translation (Japanese to English)
We have a report from the fj.life.in-japan Dynamics Officer that Declan Murphy
has exploded. Flight director confirms that:

This is actually how I started out, incidentally. My first full-time position
back in 1994 was for a small company in Gifu that developed specialized CAD
systems (this one for architectural stone facades: granite, marble, etc). I was
engaged to translate the four-inch-thick user's manual into English... the hard
way. (My major was computer sciences, but I didn't know the first thing about
architectural stone, and still don't. I had to badger companies in the US with
questions about terminology all the time.)
My Japanese ability at the time was mediocre at best, but in such an environment
one tends to learn awfully fast. I credit that job with teaching me most of the
business-ese, kanji, and office manners I know today.
