The 747-100B/SR's that JAL flies are NOT antiquated jets and have been
re-engine and updated on regular basis, nor are they as old as plain
747-100's. They are slower that 747-400's and have only about 1/2 the range
of a 747-400, but it was a trade off for higher capacity, a stronger
airframe, and more landing cycles during its lifetime. These jets were
specially designed by Boeing just for JAL inter-island service where high
capacity/short range and more takeoff/landings was the key features, and not
the overall range. These are the best and most economical 747's for the
type of flying JAL does between various cities in Japan.
