They have not changed.
They sell a number of tickets without reservation at their own discount
condition ( like
70 000 yen Osaka to major European cities). Then when you want to book, they
may add supplements or say you can only take certain flights. And they also
add supplements if you prefer minor cities for departure and arrival (like
Nagoya for you, Luxembourg for me).
It is a different system as the "discount tickets" of agencies (whose price
varies according to demand/offer and agencies' willingless to get rid of a
stock they failed to sell as packages).
I always compare both options as it's impossible to tell a priori which is
cheaper. For one-way tickets, I have always found it was more interesting to
get them from the airline company.

And now you have the baby, you can no longer travel in incomfortable or
uncertain
conditions. I don't care much about the conditions : I avoid eating and
drinking anything but water, I sleep most of the flight and I don't find you
sleep much better in first class.

Why didn't you make overnight stopovers ? Last year, I had more time, so I
took Singapore Airlines. I did a 1 week stop-over on the way back, just for
Chinese New Year in Sg. That was great and that costed me only the aiport
tax.
