Maybe I will have to explain this.

Ryan was told that he won't be sitting with gaikokujin.  To him Japanese
are gaikokujin so he can't sit with them. Or does gaikokujin mean
non-Japanese? Then he can't sit with the Japanese because he is a
gaikokujin, and will have to sit with gaikokujin, but he was told he
won't be sitting with gaikokujin.

Rather confusing for everyone.
