I found out later that the first two makes of the movie were translated "A
Light Snowfall." I just didn't want to be an even bigger loser by replying
to my own post twice, so waited for another reply...

Googling for "A LIGHT SNOWFALL" "koji shima" will give you the (very slim)
pickings apparently available on this topic in English.
"細雪" "島耕二" gives slightly better results. Especially poking around in
that nifty forum may be illuminating (although you have to be a paying
member to post -- bastards!)
Perhaps some Japanese film groups might also be of use. I would suggest
poking around in that goo site.
