For me, the expense is not so much the greens fees but all the other
stuff -- accomodations, clubs, meals, balls, and the prerequisite shoes.
For prices you might check out -
Nobeyama in Yamanashi:
www.chateraiseresort.co.jp/GOLF/index.html
or, up in Hokkaido:
http://www.chateraise.co.jp/cc/golf.html#01
(ie. a weekday round costs 5,000 - 7,000 yen)
I've been to Nobeyama - reasonable and nice, family type of place. The
nearby train station in Yatsugatake is supposedly the highest JR station in
Japan. Closer to Tokyo, you might also check out a club called Tsuru in
Otsuki -- busier and perhaps a little more exclusive. To get that similar
feeling for a much lower price, you can also head on over to your local
driving range. ;-)
