In short, the Kobe pseudo-westerners eat beef because they're trying to be
honorary whites, but the Osakans had been eating beef for donkeys years, and
the British (just to confound those Japanese who try to be honorary whites)
eat kippers, which have been eaten in outlying areas of Japan for centuries.

Yup! This all - er - jibes with the pattern of human folly we've been
delineating here. Could we perhaps agree just to pity these foolish mortals
