I think the Japan Sea coast area like Matsue, Tottori where Hearn had
lived is very similar to the coast of Britain. You will see kippers
being hung in the front of fishermen's houses in little fishing
villages in that region, Tottori is close to northern, the Japan sea
side of Hyogo prefecture, and Kyoto prefecture that belong to Kinai
as "Near Kinai(Kinki)", and is a well-known region for kippers.

I've never been to Britain, but the scenes of kippers being hung in
the front of fishermen's houses in a fishing village in some coast in
Britain I saw on TV just reminded me the scene of northern Hyogo
prefecture called Tajima, which is the neighbor region of Tottori.
Those people in Tajima region are completely not westernized thus they
eat kippered flounders in every morning as traditional breakfast. If
you ever visit that region and stay in a Minshuku, you will see that.
But funny thing I heard is that completely westernized British people
also eat those kippers in their breakfast, is that true? I guesss
that was one thing that Hearn liked.
