The no driver needed bit is sorta true if the camera meets the usb standard
for a generic storage device. If it does, it should show up as a generic USD
drive with a drive letter assigned. When all else fails, a memory card
reader/adapter may be the simplest way out. Besides, use of one does not
drain the camera battery. I did have similar problems, until I was able to
update an inf file from the Camera Mfr that had entries for the specific
camera model I have. Now the Mfr is back to a "generic" install for most of
their camera models.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the USB controller and port drivers may or may
not help.
