I actually knew a Japanese guy in college who had this all worked out.
What he would say is America is "soto" and Japan is "naka". If pressed
he would explain at length what this was supposed to mean, but of
course it could mean anything. The key is to say it with a knowing
intellectual air and then look bemused if someone asks you to explain.
