Considering that TV animation is mainly meant for kids, even in Japan,
gee, I can't imagine why kids might watch it or be interested in it.

Why not? Considering the "experts" who claim TV should be limited to very
few hours per week, if allowed at all, what should they be watching
instead? Survivor? London Boots? American Idol? Friends? Uncut R rated
Hollywood features broadcast during prime time on weekends or during long
holidays? If my kids were to sit in front of the TV, Anpanman, Sazae-san
and Chibi Marukochan on Sundays, or some NHK shows would be some of the
best stuff they could see.

As long as he had other interests, and average social skills, what would
be wrong with your son watching shows along the lines of Anpanman,
Sazae-san, or Chibi Marukochan, or NHK cartoons or children's programming?
