Did you try a separate PCMCIA wifi card, just to see if you can diagnose 
where the problem lies?  You might be able to borrow one from someone for a 
week or so.  If you can get one, disable the onboard wifi and install the 
drivers for the PCMCIA one... and see if it does the same thing.  If the 
problem is reproducable with the PCMCIA, it would at least point you in the 
direction of the Access Point or Router instead of the integrated Atheros.
