Bit late, but I'll take this on. I'm an owner of the Platinum series largely
because I never bought the original DVDs. (I became an Eva-fan rather later
than most).

ADV is in the business of making money. With Evangelion, they have the
advantage of a devoted fanbase, combined with automatic hype from the
persistient live-action movie rumors.

While I do think it was somewhat irresponsible for them to release the
"Director's Cut" editions of the final episodes only months before
announcing they had picked up the Platinum editions, that's their call.

Well, that makes sense. Tiffany Grant has demonstrated (on disc 4, I
believe) that she is a huge fan of the show or at least her character, as
is (her husband) Matt Greenfield. There really weren't that many people
deeply involved with the US production of the show.

Although, now that you mention it, subtitled commentary tracks from the
Japanese discs would have been nice.

And it looks MUCH better. Not to mention the far more extensive use of soft
subtitles.

Although that does bring up another point, that the remaster may really only
display its full potential when released in a next-generation hi-def disc
format.

I've only heard the Japanese, and it is a much better mix, I think. ADV
probably did not have quite the resources or desire to do the same.

Have a look at the "Mythology of Evangelion" featurette on disc 5, which
attacks one way of looking at Eva.

If you can get someone to buy your original DVDs, these are much better. Not
perfect, or even necessary if you already own one set, but better.
