No it isn't, at least not in the US. It might not take quite the
prominence that the English Japanese press gives, but it's good
journalism to list such a detail.

I'm curious why you think it is irrelevant? And note that one reason, I
believe, the nationality gets reported nowadays is that it wasn't that
way before and many people complained because just saying 'a foreigner
robbed a store' is painting with too broad a brush.
