I think it started as that, but I don't think it's an epithet now.  I
generally think of a "geek" as being smart, thin, young, and
intellectually curious.

For instance, there is a service where I live called the "Geek Squad,"
or something like that.  I think it's run out of Best Buy.  They are
people who come to your home to help with computer problems.

Originally yes, which is why women would have coined the term.  If you
aren't interested in sex, you can't be manipulated, and odds are that
you won't do anything for women, such as getting married and giving
them babies. Obviously, women had an interest in discouraging such
behavior, but they couldn't call the men jerks or assholes, because the
men weren't hurting anyone.  "Nerd" was outdated, and possibly made
popular by the string of movies, so they needed a new word.  Geek was
it.
