I was intentionally vague because, while it really annoys me when
people do that on the travel forums I frequent, it also gets a wider
array of responses as people try to fill in the gap. If I could spend
less than $100 I'd be really happy.

Here's the 'why Paris' bit. In August I'm going to Chennai, India to
train some Indian PhDs (or some such) how to do my job, and I decided
to work in a layover on the way back. I wanted to use either a
Northwest or United partner so I can get the miles. Our corporate
travel agent couldn't get me the flight through Brussels that I
wanted, the Frankfurt flight was too expensive (and I didn't want to
go to Frankfurt), the London flight is on American, and I didn't want
to go through Doha in the Middle East. That left Paris. I might
actually get out of the city; an old, old friend lives south of Paris
and I've emailed him. I might not go to Paris itself if anyone has
another suggestion; I've been twice in the last 20 years.
