The story was there.  It wasn't much more than a series of vignettes,
but not everything has to be the epic cliche that you usually see.

As for the gameplay, some of that is in building the game world.
Though other games have done it better (the Dark Cloud series most
notably), it's still a welcome change.  There are also a ton of
techniques to learn based on which type of weapon you're using, and
your weapon also affects how you level up.  There are also pets,
weapon tempering, and other interesting things.  Anyone who can't see
the gameplay in those things must be blind.

I agree, Chrono Cross is bad and overrated.
