Is that a rhetorical question or are you really open to considering
alternative answers, because it seems you have already made up your
mind.

Anyway, one hideously obvious reason you failed to observe is that the
Opium war was a hundred years ago where all the people who suffered
are dead. Arguably, standards over a hundred years ago are nowhere
near as civilized as standards expected just a mere fifty years ago -
when the Japanese atrocities against China occurred, the barbarism of
which only served to permanently disgust and outrage victims and their
relatives. There are many survivors of WWII who suffered and still
remember, so it's no wonder why living memory is more passionate than
history records.
