Just in general (not only with regard to student loans), it is a good 
idea not to cancel out your US (or other overseas) bank accounts when 
moving to Japan. It is very useful to have an overseas checking account, 
for example. Wiring money into it to replenish your balance is generally 
pretty straightforward, and many (most?) banks in the US will mail your 
statements to you here in Japan for no extra charge.

Trying to set up an overseas account once you are in Japan would be a 
lot more difficult, I would expect.
