I would suspect that the actual spelling is Kaoru. Nowadays (and I even
believe even back when NGE was created), there is no longer a character
for "wo" in Hiragana. There might be one possibly in Kanji. If not (and
the name is written in Hiragana), then the name would be Kaoru, and it
would be written ka - o - ru (3 characters). The spelling Kaworu was
created during the translation to simulate the way it would be
pronounced in English.
Then again, I may be completely wrong, as I'm only in my second year of
Japanese.
