Hello Tiny and et al...

Even the best digital camera needs a little bit of support in the form of
image processing software.

I wonder if you are new to image capture?  The reason I ask because the
illumination is probably much the same as for film based cameras.  Whatever
preferences you may have had in the past should have a digital image
equivalent.

FWIW digital provides some fantastic black & white images so I suspect depth
of field may be important to you with an option to soft focus or sharpen
areas in the image.  These really are best done after the image has been
captured (IMHO)

Try the major digital image software houses website - some have 30 day trial
downloads, others irfanview or something like that, have free software.

If you have the correct camera (I think that means the correct sensor these
days) and software I am sure it will help immensely.  Good luck with your
