Taking pictures indoors with no flash is a shot in the dark. You will have to set your speed to as low as possible using a tripod, etc., and adjusting your f-stop. Doing this is a problem as a live band will have movement so goodbye picture. I would say that without a flash you will have problems indoors as all shadows will be shown. This problem is not just a digital related problem as you would get the same with film. Working with a digital, you will find, is very easy compared to film and the quality at a proper resolution is as good, though, many filmists will argue that statement. I am sorry I cannot help with a solution, but, if getting the lights into the picture is that important, keep experimenting with your manual settings, if your camera will allow you to do that. Keep trying and experimenting, you don't need to worry about film costs. By the way, are you having focusing problems, (that is, if you do not have manual focusing)? I ask because some camera's including my FUJI S5000 will give me problems in a hazy, darker lighting indoors. Good luck, let me know how you do.
