I've been using a real name on Usenet for almost all of the 17
years I've been playing. My spam levels have to be seen to be believed
but hell, shit happens. SpamAssassin catches most of it and the
great thing about having 4 or 5 legitimate former email addresses
(thanks to organizational changes within Monash U) is that I'll get
4 or 5 emails with subjects like: "URGETNE: contact Barristar Micheal Cache"
and I know I can confidently blow them away unread.

I love it when people email me and apologetically say they are
changing their netnyms. Makes me feel every one of my 59.7 years.
