If it was overheating, I would think the fan would run more. Although 
the fan or the fan circuit could be bad too. I don't know if you have an 
external monitor or not (most laptops can use an external monitor too)? 
But that would be nice for a quick check too. :)

And yes, fluorescent lamps when going bad will sometimes work when you 
start them and then quit until you restart them again. Or sometimes 
works intermittently. But the inverter can act just the same. So it is 
very hard to guess which one it could be.
