Stroke order is one of the first things I made sure was correct when
using it, but it seems to make no difference. As I said, even when I've
asked Japanese friends to try out the same kanji, it suggests several
kanji - but not the one being written.
Simple kanji such as the one you mentioned are fine, but I've had lots
of trouble with ones with more than 10 or so strokes.
