I've always found that change of attitude striking in japanese people.

When you're in Japan as a tourist or to study everyone treats you like a 
god (oh gaijin da, sugo----i and such) and is really nice to you because 
they think you don't know a thing about the place.

But when you stay there for a while and start working and making a life 
many wil turn their back on you and take on that xenophobic pose of a 
dog afraid someone's gonna steal its bone.

I've never been able to figure out wether they do that because they 
don't want gaijins to take their jobs or just because they feel that a 
gaijin knowing their ways is somehow stealing their culture. I guess 
it's a bit of both...
