We always make reservations through the Odakyu Travel Center (Shinjuku
Station). You can usually get a Saturday night stay for around 25,000 a
person including the Odakyu travel pass which give you access to all the
transportation in the region. If you get the transportation items
separately, it can get expensive. There is a cable car, ship, ropeway and
my favorite, the Tozan Tetsuo line. Most ryokan will have the onsen and
meal included or its not really a ryokan. You want to make sure that you get
a place that has meal service in your room and separate indoor baths as well
as rotemburos for men and women. Some places will alternate times if they
only have one bath and that's a pain. A big, middle-of-the road choice is
Hotel Okada, but its pretty big and might get a little easy to get lost.
But their outdoor bath is huge and has four different areas to go to. Hotel
Yoshiike might be better - the bath isn't a modern but they have a huge
garden in the back and a couple of private baths as well. I think their
food was better. Both are in Hakone Yumoto. It will be cheaper if you can
go on a weekday.
