Is it really free?

Yes! Greeter services are offered completely free of charge to visitors.
Plus if you make your reservation with sufficient advance notice your
Greeter will give you a free FUNPASS so you can zip around the city by
subway and bus fare with your Greeter!.
Who are the travelers who use Big Apple Greeter's service?

Virtually any visitor who would like a "friend" to help them get the most
out of their stay in New York.
Travelers with special interests, leisure travelers,  business travelers and
their families, travelers with disabilities, senior citizens,  apprehensive
or intimidated visitors, clients of international organizations doing
business in the city, families of long-term health care patients,  NYC
assigned diplomats,  military personnel and their families, parents and
students exploring educational institutions,  the adventurous or curious. .
Any visitor who wants to discover something "off the beaten path".

Can New York residents use Big Apple Greeter to visit the city?


No unfortunately Big Apple Greeter is not able to make appointments with
NYC's residents but a volunteer would be happy to meet your out of town
visitors.

What does a Greeter volunteer actually do?

Provide a personalized one-on-one visit with a New Yorker - not a group
tour:
Highlight the remarkable cultural and ethnic diversity of New York by
introducing visitors to neighborhoods in all five boroughs that they might
not visit on their own. Greeters show them the little things most tourists
never see: the lesser known sights and attractions and the fascinating
little details which give a neighborhood its color and flavor;
Show visitors what life is really like in New York by accompanying the
visitors through their own or other familiar neighborhoods;
Orient visitors by answering questions and helping them feel more
comfortable welcome and informed in the world's most exciting city.
Who are the volunteers and how are they selected?

A wide cross section of New Yorkers who are chosen regardless of age race
gender nationality disability religion belief marital status or sexual
orientation.
A diverse corps of more than 500 New Yorkers from all walks of life selected
for their enthusiasm and knowledge of New York City and representing many
different neighborhoods in all five boroughs.
Carefully selected individuals who have been interviewed screened and have
attended a mandatory 3-4 hour orientation session.
Volunteers are carefully selected. They are individually interviewed
screened and required to attend one or more orientation sessions before
becoming a Big Apple Greeter volunteer "friend". Acceptance as a volunteer
is not automatic.
Are foreign language-speaking volunteers available?

Yes. There are currently 30 or more foreign languages spoken among the
volunteers and Big Apple Greeter is in the process of recruiting and
training additional volunteers with foreign language skills.
How are Greeters and visitors matched and how do they meet?

Big Apple Greeter matches Greeters and visitors on a one-to-one basis
through information provided by the visitor about date of arrival requested
neighborhood special interest language and disability requirements etc.
Greeters walk with individuals a family or a few friends traveling together
up to 6 maximum.
Big Apple Greeter confirms visitor requests giving the volunteer's name
arranging appropriate date time and public meeting location etc. Greeters
wearing easily identified B.A.G. buttons meet visitors at their hotel or
other public locations. Visit appointments usually lasting 2-4 hours are
meant to be neighborhood walking experiences; additionally introducing
visitors to public transportation is traditionally part of an appointment.
Who administers the program? How is it funded?

Launched in May 1992 Big Apple Greeter is an independent not-for-profit
corporation governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. The program has a
paid staff of six who recruit and train volunteers and coordinate and
promote the program and organize fundraising.
Big Apple Greeter a city-wide program receives in-kind support from the
office of the Manhattan Borough President and is funded by corporations
foundations and individual donations.
In 2002, Big Apple Greeter was evaluated by the New York Philanthropic
Advisory Service, a branch of the Better Business Bureau which rates
nonprofits. Big Apple Greeter has met the New York Philanthropic Advisory
Service's highest standards for charitable institutions. For more

Greeter services are free of charge to the visitor.

Will you share my contact information with anyone?

No. Your name and address will not be shared with anybody outside of the Big
Apple Greeter office. Depending on when you submit your visit request form
and when your visit dates are we may assign a Greeter before you leave your
home. In some of these instances Greeters like to contact their new friends
in advance to better prepare for your time together. If you would not like
us to share your email address with your Greeter please indicate this in the
notes field.

New York City is Welcoming Friendly and
Accessible to Travelers with Disabilities


Every year 30 million travelers pass through New York City for business or
pleasure.
With all that New York has to offer however many visitors arrive in the city
full of questions about how to get around which streets are safe and whom
can you trust? Big Apple Greeter offers one solution to visitors looking for
a personalized orientation to NYC. Since 1992 Big Apple Greeter has
connected over 30 000 visitors with its 500 volunteer residents (Greeters)
for free 2-4 hour visits to the neighborhoods where New Yorkers live and
work. In the process Big Apple Greeter is putting a human face on NYC
helping visitors obtain the answers to their questions from real New
Yorkers. In late 1993 American Express Corporation and Con Edison of New
York began providing financial support to develop the Greeter Access Project
whose aim is to reach out to travelers with disabilities and let th「然しな

To date we have recruited and trained nearly 50 volunteers with disabilities
and trained the majority of our 500 non-disabled volunteers to be aware of
access issues and be prepared to integrate people with disabilities into the
mainstream Greeter program. This is possible largely because Metropolitan
Transportation Authority New York City Transit's buses are equipped with
lifts so that wheelchair users can travel with their non-disabled friends
and family anywhere in the city. New York City's public transportation is
one of the world's largest and therefore has the largest public bus system
operating.

for travelers with disabilities?
The answer is an enthusiastic YES!
Nearly all of New York City's incredible sights and attractions are
accessible and a number of organizations not only make it easier for
travelers with physical disabilities to enjoy the Big Apple they offer

The resource list includes names and numbers of organizations which serve
various segments of the disability community. Special discounts for people
with physical disabilities make many theatrical productions and music
performances affordable. Tickets are available through the box office at the
individual theaters or through the Tele-Charge wheelchair hotline. For the
deaf community the Hands On! organization organizes sign language
interpreting for many cultural events in NYC including sign-interpreted
tours of museum exhibitions signed performances of theater productions and
captioned screenings of selected films. Blind visitors who want to attend a
play can call Hospital Audiences Inc. to benefit from its audio-description
service of Blind audience members wear an audio loop and listen to a
description of the physical action on-stage related by a trained sighted
volunteer. The Metropolitan Museum's Education Department is developing a
similar program for blind visitors wherein a volunteer will describe the
objects or artworks on exhibit so that blind visitors can better enjoy the
Museum's offerings.

In general all the museums are extremely accessible and they work hard as a
group to maintain and improve accessibility. The Metropolitan Museum of Art
the Museum of Modern Art and The Queens Museum all have elaborate programs
to make their services and facilities accessible to people with
disabilities. The Guggenheim Museum's spiral ramp easily qualifies as the
largest and most innovative wheelchair ramp in the world!

New York City is full of stories of recent improvements in accessibility.
Since the Access Project at Big Apple Greeter was launched in Fall 1993 the
Empire State Building Observatory has become totally accessible the
Metropolitan Transportation Authority retired the last of its buses without
lifts and many large organizations have implemented city-wide plans to
improve accessibility for disabled New Yorkers and consequently visitors
with disabilities traveling through the city.

In addition to making city parks physically accessible the New York City
Parks & Recreation Department works with Hospital Audiences Inc. to provide
seating areas and parking access for audience members with disabilities to
many special events in the Parks in all five boroughs. The Parks Department
also maintains a network of recreation centers with pools and gyms in all
the boroughs providing extraordinary system-wide access for people with
disabilities.

The New York Public Library is also a large public/private partnership which
has excellent program access city-wide for people with disabilities as you
can easily see from the 42nd Street branch whose landmark status did not
prevent the Library from installing large ramps into the library building
and also into Bryant Park! The Brooklyn Academy of Music and The Public
Theater often offer people with disabilities special seating areas and make
special arrangements to provide access for disabled audience-members.


Prospective visitors with disabilities are not surprised to hear that New
York City is manageable if not 100% accessible because they have heard about
the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and expect that in the United
States they are going to find people with disabilities mainstreamed and
moving towards a cityscape in which physical barriers are being removed and
the promise of a more accessible future shines brightly.
