I live in a ruin too. They'll never install the hikari fiber or even the
ADSL here*, zero percent of my neighbours are interested in a cable TV
deal... so till I move,  I've taken a wireless USB gadget. The speed
compares to only other option, which was ISDN, but you don't have to deal
with NTT, get a TA or anything. You can use anywhere in urban Japan with
your laptop.

*officially, they will...but NTT cannot promise it will be done before 2008
!!!
