My wife changed her surname to match mine when she learned she was 
expecting. That way all three of us in our family have the same surname 
on our passports and the like. Mrs. Reynolds goes by her maiden name in 
her professional activities, though. It's not that she keeps her 
"official" name a secret, but dealing with the katakana on a day-to-day 
basis is just too much of a pain, as others have mentioned.
