Cancer Drugs Get Cheaper, in India
Roche Holding AG is cutting the price of two expensive cancer drugs
in India—and giving them new names—in an effort to gain market share
and avoid competition from generic drugs in the fast-growing economy.
The move marks a shift for the Swiss drug maker, which long has argued
that consumers everywhere should pay the same price for its
medications. By giving the drugs new names in India, Roche hopes to
avoid losing pricing power elsewhere, though it isn't clear the
company will succeed on that score.

Studies Link Daily Doses of Aspirin to Reduced Risk of Cancer
Taking aspirin every day may significantly reduce the risk of many
cancers and prevent tumors from spreading, according to two new
studies published on Tuesday.
The findings add to a body of evidence suggesting that cheap and
widely available aspirin may be a powerful if overlooked weapon in the
battle against cancer. But the research also poses difficult questions
for doctors and public health officials, as regular doses of aspirin
can cause gastrointestinal bleeding and other side effects. Past
studies have suggested that the drawbacks of daily use may outweigh
the benefits, particularly in healthy patients.

Breast cancer study says more than 1,700 black women die unnecessarily
each year
Nearly five black women per day die needlessly from breast cancer
because they don$B!G(Bt have information and access to proper care,
according to a study released Wednesday.
The report said poverty and racial inequities, not genetics, are
responsible for the higher death rate, even though more white women
get the disease.

FDA Panel Rejects Merck Drug for Sarcoma (ridaforolimus, Taltorvec),
but Backs Glaxo's Votrient
A federal advisory panel on Tuesday rejected an experimental Merck &
Co. drug for use in patients with soft-tissue or bone sarcomas—on
concerns that it didn't work well enough to offset potentially serious
side effects—while backing a different drug from GlaxoSmithKline PLC.

More evidence for opiates role in cancer growth
Two new studies in the journal Anesthesiology have found that the
opiate drugs used to relieve pain in cancer patients appear to
stimulate the growth and spread of tumors. "These studies have caused
anesthesiologists to re-evaluate how best to do anesthesia and pain
control for cancer patients," said University of Chicago's Jonathan
Moss, who co-wrote a commentary on the findings in the same journal.

Early lung cancer screenings for smokers leave more questions
Many smokers wish there was a way to detect lung cancer in its early
stages -- a test that would do for the No. 1 cancer killer what
mammograms did for breast cancer.

Cancer Warning Over Cancer Warnings
Sometimes, it seems we are living in a $B!H(BGolden Age of Alarmism,$B!I(B with
so much fantastically bad news about all the things that are
supposedly killing us that it$B!G(Bs difficult to keep track of what,
precisely, we should be afraid of; fear itself, perhaps. Do I get
cancer from eating any red meat, or just heart disease? Or is that
just the crispy burnt bits? Oh – wait maybe it$B!G(Bs the caramel coloring
from cooking. Isn$B!G(Bt that supposed to give me cancer? What if I cook
the meat rare – or will that put me at risk of E-coli? What if I eat
rare red meat and white rice at the same time? Will I get diabetes
too?

Mayo Clinic researchers building melanoma vaccine to combat skin
cancer
Mayo Clinic researchers have trained mouse immune systems to eradicate
skin cancer from within, using a genetic combination of human DNA from
melanoma cells and a cousin of the rabies virus. The strategy, called
cancer immunotherapy, uses a genetically engineered version of the
vesicular stomatitis virus to deliver a broad spectrum of genes
derived from melanoma cancer cells directly into tumors. In early
studies, 60 percent of tumor-burdened mice were cured in fewer than
three months and with minimal side effects. Results of the latest
study appear this week in the journal Nature Biotechnology.
