By 'English' I take it you mean UKland?

By 'stay' I take it you mean for more than 6 months - since both Japanese
and Sepponians may remain in the UK on a tourist visa for 6 months.

For more info why not contact the British Embassy in Tokyo
http://www.uknow.or.jp/uknow_e/checklist/

As for the hows and whys of longer stay - some sort of sponsorship, study
visa or being able to demonstrate that you have the means to support
yourselves and will NOT in any way be a burden upon the state (this also
includes working illegally).

When I used to work in human resources at a very large London university we
used to have a hell of a time trying to convince the immigration authorities
to grant us visas for non-UKlanders to work as assistant professors whilst
they completed their M.Sc's and PhD's. Maybe it didn't help that often the
department in which a lot of these students were based was called the
'London School of Rubber'
