Private Library librarianship bibliophile 1897 FA
The Private Library by Arthur L Humphreys .VGC 1897 Strangeways & Son
Hatchards 187 Piccadily London.Appropriately enough there are two
small library stamps on blank endpapers, otherwise a great copy.
This really is an exquisite and ultra rare book for the
bibliophile, especially one with a stately pile to fill! The author
states that having visited various Country Houses he has found the
state of these private libraries to be lacking in various ways. He
deplores the inability of the servants to handle books properly , and
the general state of these collections. He is also dismayed at the fact
that many owners pay more attention to their billiard rooms than their
library. Being the owner of neither a billiard room nor library I can
only read with envy!
Basically a lovely vintage book on the running of a old style private
library. Some subjects :- What is a GOOD edition / On the care of
books /Classification / Bookbinding / Boudoir libraries / The
Catalogue / Old Country libraries / A Library Annexe / Miscellaneous
Appliances / Mr Ruskins Advice / Bookcases / Library Architecture / A
Librarian etc.
