Well I'd go for the warrentee fix anyway. Most companies are cool.

And you don't even need to lie or anything. Just say:

This is broken and I'ld like to get it
fixed on the warrentee if possible. Please.

If they ask what happened just reply: It became broken.

I've had many things like that happen in the past and usually the
shop handeling it doesn't even ask as they want to sell you your next
camera. /Usually/ this is also true whenever I've had to contact
the manufacturer directly. The first question they ask is: How long
did you buy it? Followed by: Ok, send it in. 2 weeks will be ok?

The only exception to this are the makers that manufacture ultra junky
low quality goods like Sony, Panasonic, Hitachi, etc. Anything with
an camera makers name on it (Nikon, Cannon, Olympus, Fuji, etc.) is
usually cool with thier services and support.

All in all even if they refuse to do it under warentee (not likely IMO)
the $50 ~ $75 it'll cost you to have /them/ do it right will be worth it!
