There is no need to provide so many courses in building technology and
management (BTM) in the universities for the time being because the
employers are compelling graduates in BTM to become quantity surveyors. It
is a complete waste of our public money to train them. The problem is the
quality of the contractors are not good enough and therefore they
deliberately put them into departments which do not suit their career
development so that they cannot gain sufficient experiences to become their
competitors! These contractors are selfish and are wasting the public's
money while the government allows them to do so. Every BTM graduate should
gain some experiences in quantity surveying and this is essential, but they
should not be quantity surveyors eventually. There were and are lots of
problems in the construction industry and one of the main reasons is that
the government does not ensure the people with sufficient academic
qualifications are in the positions to carry out the relevant works. The
government should ensure the graduates in BTM get the right job. Otherwise,
stop producing such graduates to stop wasting the public resources. There
are many other areas, in which such resources are urgently required.
