My 'Shinco' DVD player (bought three years ago) plays just about
everything - and with Macrovision disabled too - not that I've ever copied a
DVD to video - just couldn't see the point. My Sony DVD player (bought
three & half years ago) plays practically nothing other than retail DVD
movies and CDs. The DVD player in my Panasonic Q cube is a fixed one out of
http://www.lik-sang.com/default.php in Hong Kong. It plays practically
anything.

I'm considering a DVD-R/RW burner for the next 'evolution' of my
workstation, but just because it's going to be a whole lot easier to send
home video footage of mr.sumo jnr. to his grandparents in the UK if I can
encode them to PAL format DVD through a computer. I burn them to VCDs at
the moment - but I'm not a patient editor, which is necessary when you're
dealing with limited space. A 10-pack of DVD-R discs at my local Yamada
retails for about 2800yen at the moment - personally I think that's fairly
reasonable.
