Fast Times on Chuo Highway
OK, so I'm driving down the highway towards Tokyo yesterday... There was a
non-descript bus in the same group of vehicles for part of the way. I was
ahead of it mostly, but remember now some slightly unusual traffic patterns,
as if some of the drivers had spotted a radar trap or something and slowed
down. Anyway, I get caught behind some slow poke and have to wait until the
aforementioned bus passes by before following behind it in the fast lane.
It's a tour bus, apparently, with a large flat screen at the front of the
bus playing for the passengers. The seats and windows are quite high above
road level, so you can't really see much of the passengers. But I counted
quite a few heads, maybe 30. Seen through the back window, it looks like
they're showing some japanese drama or something. It piqued my interest
since I could make out a woman with long hair and - then the bus changed
lanes. I followed suit, and it occurred to me it probably wasn't a good idea
to watch the TV in another vehicle whilst driving in moderately heavy
traffic at 110 kph. But curiosity got the better of me, and my eyes were
rewarded with the sight of a topless woman jumping up and down from her
seated position (on the screen, that is) among a couple other scenes.
By some twist of fate, my exit was only a few kilos down the road so I am
unable to report on the show's outcome but at least it replaced some of the
usual highway grind. Got me thinking though - who were these guys, where
were they going, why did they travel together, and what purpose did the
in-house entertainment serve? I'm just not sure the obvious answers are the
correct ones.
best regards
