Re: Quake
I think rather than "Quake" a more appropriate title would be "QUAKE!!"
My building in Tokyo was doing the twist for quite a long period of time. Then it seemed to calm down for a while. Then started up again almost as fiercely.
This may not have been THE big one (at least for Tokyo) but it definitely was A big one.
Biggest problem for me: Not being able to get out of the building. Our floor is on the 6th (out of 6) in the building and for "safety reasons" they keep the emergency stairwell exits locked. The only way up or down is via elevators. In the event of an emergency, they are supposed to unlock the doors so that we can get out.
Building bosai center made an announcement that they had unlocked the doors. Except that they didn't for our floor.....While at least one guy was panicking, I had to call down to the bosai center and tell them they forgot to unlock our stairwell. Come Monday (if we are still here) I am going to register a serious complaint about this. This isn't the first incident we have had with these doors being locked. During a drill once, they opened them up and about 3 of us used them to evacuate. We were fine until we got to the bottom of the stairs and the door to the outside (and safety) was locked. So we had to go back up again. Only to find THAT door locked as well. So we ended up trapped in the stairwell.
At any rate, after the second BIG aftershock, I figured it was a good idea to evacuate and head home. Trains were stopped so that meant walking. Along with half a bazillion people. Took me 3.5 hours to walk all the way. Mobile phones were useless. Couldn't call out, couldn't call in, mail/SMS claimed to be going out but wasn't being delivered, call to 171 (BBS for emergencies) wouldn't connect. General clusterfuck all the way around. People that tried to get home a couple of hours later are having to deal with a whole lot large mass of humanity and more crowded streets.
But I shouldn't complain. People in Sendai got it royally bad. 10 metre tsunamis that were taking out houses and anything in its path for quite a ways. There was a concern that one of the nuclear plants was going to overheat in Fukushima because they couldn't pump coolant into it and get it to shut down. They just announced they have managed to work around that little problem but they are still asking people to keep their distance. Death toll isn't much but I am sure it will rise. Maybe not as high as Kobe but that is only because of the population density difference. And these aftershocks are still fairly sizable. And numerous.
