I can understand your feelings, as it is maddening, but from experience you
can tell a reaction of someone being pissed off is most definitely no
sensible consumer advice.

For every disappointed Toshiba owner you'll experience a disappointed HP or
Dell owner. We all have read the rants of people frothing due to defunct
Dell or HP units. For every Toshiba laptop that's a troublemaker you'll find
100 perfectly running Toshiba laptops.

AFAIK all Toshiba's come at least with one year international limited
guarantee. Maybe she paid less because of the shorter guarantee, but one
year is a standard - except when you start fiddling around with it as
excluded by the guarantee conditions.

If there's a problem, it has not so much to do with nominal quality of
Toshiba - nor from any A-brand - but more with service. They might have
extended a more helpful hand; with that I fully agree.

Remember that if you get a unit that doesn't work from the beginning, as you
have experienced, it's normal practice to return the unit as quickly as you
can under guarantee, not to wait months until warranty is over, followed by
complaining about not being covered by guarantee.
