Funny you should mention that, because when I was living in Kyoto, the
father of one of my roommates (British, but now teaching art history at
Australian National University) came to visit a couple of times, and I
don't think I ever heard him say the word 'Japanese.'

After a day out visiting museums and looking at temples he'd come back
and say things, 'By God that Jap pottery is beautiful.'
