The board with the power button, etc. on it has some sort of sensor that sits right beneath this magnet. I'd assume that this magnet/sensor combo is used to determine if the lid is closed. I'd try playing around with the magnet, moving it around the bezel, until you can have the lid at a reasonable angle with the laptop remaining on. -Greg
