Because as you must be aware, Japanese people living in Japan think only in
terms of
Nihonjin and Gaikokujin. When Japanese people reside overseas, they still
think of themselves
as Nihonjin, with most being aware that now they are the "gaikokujin" in
another country.
Because of the above most Japanese don't really have much reason to consider
themselves
"Oriental" much less "Asian". When one says "Asian" in Japan everyone thinks
of the
Asian Mainland, the Tairiku.
Its really only when a Nihonjin is overseas in a western country and has to
conform to that
countries definitions that one has to consider being an "Asian". Something
that meant something
else when living in Japan.
Now, this whole thread started because some website claimed that the term
"eskimo" was
offensive to the actual people because thats not what they call themselves.
I merely pointed out that Japanese in Japan don;t call themselves "Asian"
either.
Although now that I've said this, we don't call ourselves "Japanese" or our
country
"Japan" either.
