There are plenty of problems with France, including an obsession with their
dwindling role in world affairs, their lack of industrial productivity,
their political unrest, and racial bigotry, but cowardice is not one of
them.

The reason they didn't side with the US had much more to do with political
corruption in the food-for-oil program than it did in cowardice.

As for Europeans melding into one big lump, that seems to be extremely
unlikely in the near future, considering the recent political developments
there.
